The Farnsfield memorial marks the spot where Halifax Bomber MZ519-LKU crashed on 6th July, 1944, while returning from a mission over occupied territory. All seven members of the crew lost their lives.
Farnsfield itself is set a few miles East of Mansfield in North Nottinghamshire. About one mile away from the village, an impressive engraved stone stands in a small copse, flanked by seven English Oaks and two Canadian Maples. All the other trees were donated by the villagers and various local groups.
A
display board provides the background to the flight, photographs of the crew
and information on the event and its times. The Farnsfield Memorial Trust
tends the site and the youngsters of the village have pledged to maintain
it over the years to come.
By launching this "virtual" memorial we hope to achieve the following:
Start your tour by reading the background first, or perhaps the gallery. Most pictures open in their own windows when clicked and you can navigate around the site by the menu at the top. Don't forget to leave a comment in the guest book and even link to us from your own site.
A service is held at the memorial every year on the nearest Sunday to 6th July, usually around 12 noon. All are very welcome. Contact Ingrid Cotterill for more details.|
